Cybersecurity Tips for SMEs in Zambia
You do not need a fortune to be secure. These practical, low-cost steps protect most Zambian SMEs from the threats that actually hit them.

The threat is real — and local
Zambian businesses are not too small or too remote to be targeted. Phishing, ransomware, business email compromise and weak-password attacks hit SMEs across Lusaka, the Copperbelt and beyond. The good news: the vast majority of attacks are stopped by a handful of basics.
1. Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere
If you do one thing, do this. MFA on email, accounting and admin accounts stops most account-takeover attacks even when a password leaks. Use an authenticator app; SMS is better than nothing but weaker.
2. Patch, patch, patch
Unpatched software is the open door most attackers walk through. Keep operating systems, browsers, routers and firmware updated. If you cannot patch it, isolate it.
3. Backups that survive an attack
A backup you have never tested is a hope, not a backup. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two media, one off-site — and one offline so ransomware cannot reach it. Test restoring at least quarterly.
4. Train your team
Most breaches start with a person, not a machine. Short, regular awareness training on phishing, suspicious links and "the CFO asking for an urgent payment" prevents more incidents than any tool. One click by a trained user beats a fancy firewall around a careless one.
5. Secure the perimeter
- ▪A business-grade firewall, not a home router
- ▪Separate guest Wi-Fi from the office network
- ▪Disable unused accounts and open ports
- ▪Strong, unique passwords — enforce them
6. Have a plan
When something goes wrong, panic costs money. Write down: who to call, how to isolate the affected machine, where the backups are, and how to reset credentials. A one-page incident plan turns a crisis into a procedure.
7. Get a partner
Most SMEs cannot afford a full-time security team. A managed security partner gives you monitoring, patching and a response plan for a fraction of the cost — and someone to call at 02:00.
At FT Zambia we help organisations across Zambia build practical, affordable security — from firewall and endpoint protection to policy, training and 24/7 monitoring.
